Meet the Sticky Fudge family

Spring is the season for new beginnings and what better way to celebrate our new beginning than with a Q&A with owner Lizette Botha and the Sticky Fudge Design Team.

Lizette Botha

You’re a mum and entrepreneur, how do you juggle it all and stay sane?

Life is busy, and whilst planning is an essential component in helping me use my time constructively, it’s not always possible to be perfect and to juggle everything 100%.

Deadlines pop up, there’s homework to be done, meals to be cooked and there is no manual on how to best get everything done. For me, it’s important that I don’t guilt-trip myself when I can’t get to everything on my to-do list.

I am fortunate that I have a wonderful support system and I have learnt to ask for help when I need it. However, the most important aspect of being a parent and managing a business is to remember where your values lie. Sometimes, even during work chaos, you must be able to shut down your computer and go and play Lego with your child. From time to time you need to take a Friday afternoon and spend the day with your kids. The moments are fleeting, and I know that I don’t want to tell myself “if only”.

Was it always a dream to manage your own clothing line?
I have always had a strong sense for business. I studied fashion design and worked in interior design for many years, so creating beautiful things is a passion of mine. With Sticky Fudge I can bring my love for design and motherhood together. It has been an incredible rollercoaster ride so far and the excitement just keeps building as I see our ideas and visions come to life.

What have been the highlights of taking over Sticky Fudge?
To see how much effort goes into creating individual garments – the thought process, the stages of development – it is hard, yet rewarding work. Each milestone has been a stimulating challenge, helping me to grow.

Our first Look & Feel photoshoot with our nine models was an emotional occasion. It was incredibly rewarding to see how our clothing moved, how it looked on the kids and to see how happy they were wearing the clothes.

Do you have a favourite item from the range?
We will be releasing new styles in phases so there are several items that I am excited about. From Run One, the pink lily frill diaper cover print is adorable, and another favourite of mine is being released later in the season – as a hint, it’s something to do with birds – but you’ll have to wait to see!

What does the future look like for Sticky Fudge?
We will continue to create beautiful, out-of-the-box designs in high-quality fabrics and our emphasis will always be on building a long-lasting, meaningful relationship with our  consumers, the people we work with and our community. Our future is dependent on our extended “family” and we hope to grow with them.

The Sticky Fudge Design Team
What is the Sticky Fudge aesthetic?
Sticky Fudge is designed to portray the innocence of childhood, reminding us of the beauty around us which often takes the eye of a child to see.

How do you pick the materials you work with?
Because Sticky Fudge is made for children and babies, we choose all-natural fibres as far as possible and as we develop our own prints and colours, the base of the fabric as well as the quality is vital. Similarly, the way fabrics move and allow for children to explore is important.

Is sustainability and environmental impact an important factor when designing a range?
We must all do our bit to help save and sustain our environment so our fabric choices, the companies we use to make our garments, and our methods of being able to send the garments to our customers all have to be thought of against an environmental factor.

How do I build a capsule wardrobe for my child?
The Sticky Fudge range is designed so that all styles work with one another, creating numerous outfit choices for you and little one to choose from. With mix ‘n match separates, you can create your own individual look which makes wardrobe building easy and unique for each customer.

A lot of your items are unisex, what is the importance behind this?
It began with the creation of the Baby range – as a gift-giving market, many family and friends don’t always know the sex of the baby they are gifting so we wanted to create a large-enough collection for diverse gifting ideas. Then we added more gender-neutral styled items across our range to give more variety and to encourage unique outfit building options as we want to highlight the ease and accessibility of Sticky Fudge.
